Projects: Shop Assembly Table, Mobile Cabinets, and Wall Cabinets
2006
Early on in the process of developing my workshop, I came across
several ideas for custom-designed work and storage spaces. The
assembly table is made up of two 2' x 4' maple slabs sitting on top of
birch ply cabinet frames. The table served as the outfeed table
for my former table saw, which is why two miter slots can be seen in
one of the tops. The cabinet frames, in turn, have open spaces
underneath, inside which any number of different tools or other mobile
pieces can be stored. I built two drawer cabinets on casters that
fit nicely within two of the four spaces; the other two spaces have
housed numerous tools on wheels. Not shown here, I have finally
settled on using the two side "cubbies" for my two shop vacuum systems.
In addition to the assembly table and storage cabinets, I also designed
and built two wall-hanging cabinets that sit on french cleats above
several tools and my off-cut bin. The cabinets span a total of 8'
along the wall. The open shelf along the bottom of the cabinets
is especially handy for storing items that are used frequently or need
to be quickly accessible.
